Google e-mail system for 30,000 city employees in Los Angeles

Submitted on 2009/10/29 No Comment

On an unanimous vote the City Council of Los Angeles has voted to outsource its e-mailing system to Google Inc which made it the largest city in the county to make such a move by giving the web search company a big victory over the others in order to become one of the biggest software provider.

Google e-mail system

It took more the two hours of debating and the council members voted on a 12-0 ratio and approve a $7.25 million contract which would move all the 30,000 employees of the city council on Google’s cloud cover platform in the next year. The second largest city in the country has made a world-class decision by supporting the state of the art emailing system according to one councilman Tony Cardenas who took the motion to approve the Google proposal. Several council member did have objections to the contract earlier on the ground if it would in reality offer any real cost savings as Google predicted and if it would be ready to store any data from the law enforcement agencies where the security standards are very high. As now, Los Angeles will be the initial cities of this system, council members were worried that they would sign on before the system would have been properly tested.

The contract is approved and awaiting an amendment that requires Google Inc to offer compensation to the city in the event their system was breached with the city data being stolen or exposed. It has taken a year to finally come across with Google competing on high ends with other software companies like Microsoft to ensure success and Google believes that as Los Angeles will make a transition to their could system, others will also follow which Microsoft was trying hard to stop by sending their executives and lawyers to Los Angeles to present a case against Google.

The city is planning to complete the implementation of this Google system till June and will initially start with a period in a pilot where only a number of employees will be using it to test the system. The law enforcement agencies including the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) will switch over to the new system once satisfied with its performance.
